Crossing the Divide: using the shared language of music to connect across differences

“When sitting down to rehearsal, the first action a group of musicians must take is to listen to a tuning note and take steps to find common ground starting with ‘A'”. This mutually agreed-upon starting point lays a foundation of trust upon which the group can build. This workshop will present concrete ways in which our universally shared language of music can teach students the value of listening, contributing to a whole, and finding common ground.”

 

Dr. Rena Kraut- Executive Director, CAYO

A Professional musician and educator Dr. Rena Kraut is the founder and Executive Director of CAYO. This non-profit organization seeks to bring together the young people of the US and Cuba through education, cultural exchange, and performance. CAYO runs cultural diplomacy programming in both the US and Cuba for students, parents and teaching artists, seeking to build a stronger world through the arts. In 2019, Dr. Kraut was recognized by Musical Americaas one of 30 top professionals of the year for her work leading CAYO. 

Dr. Kraut holds degrees from Rice University and the University of Minnesota as well as degrees in both music and creative non-fiction writing from Northwestern University.
