Ladson-Billings (1995) refers to pedagogies that respond to learners’ cultural diversity and empower them intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically, using cultural references to deepen knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Thus, teaching combines academic excellence, identification with the learner’s culture, and actions aimed at reducing prejudice and promoting critical social change (Banks, 2004).
Israeli society, which is characterized by a plurality of communities from a variety of cultures, and its education system is sectoral with educational institutions divided into streams. This structure makes teaching that promotes cultural competence an educational challenge, requiring exposure to a variety of cultures as well as understanding and respecting the values, attitudes, and beliefs of people from different cultures, while addressing intercultural differences in teaching processes (NCCC, n/d).
The purpose of the symposium is to present and discuss organizational processes that have been implemented to promote the cultural competence of faculty and students at four teacher education institutions and the TEC Intercollegiate Center. The symposium will be attended by representatives from these institutions, all of whom are members of the “Systemic Pedagogical Change in Academia” think tank operating at the Mofet Institute.
